I am confused now

[edit]

Why conflicted here... but I though this images because of its date was to be put under the Greek category. In the end even if they have no chance, they are worth to be put in the statistics...--Alexmar983 (talk) 03:38, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When the image is that bad, then I don't want it to part of statistics. Kruusamägi (talk) 03:40, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will create "unsuitable images" categories. So there will be a honest statistics in the end. Keeping track of bad things is important IMHO. Of course it's not my priority now but I will fix it soon as I can, as I am also writing in the procedural draft. If we want create something that works in the future, than the only way is a workflow that tries to keep tracks of these things. I mean, it is not the end of the word of course if one slips away but I was taking care in a more precise way, and it's the same cost in the end.--Alexmar983 (talk) 05:08, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Double categorization

[edit]

see this edit. I was keeping it to remove all of them at the very end, otherwise the stats are all confused since I did not start this way (I did not have the time). Than I would have removed it in the final revision. But ok, let's remove it now. the problem is that keeping them in the general I had a very clear sum of all uploaded files. Now all it's going to be scattered in a lot of national sub-sub-categories. The core point of a statistics is to be consistent. gosh , we really need to write this down clearly next time, I am ret-conning everything but I am also busy on many other sides.--Alexmar983 (talk) 07:07, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

here is the problem, to remove the double catgeorization, you must remove the tag... the tag should not be removed, it's a pity. You should keep such information. I am sure there are elegants way to keep information instead up sweeping under the carpet... --Alexmar983 (talk) 07:20, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There was already some mess, so it didn't bother me that much. Like the number of images don't add up to the same number at all.
It should also be checked that images don't have two competition categories next to them (I have found few). Or any other unsuitable categorization. Kruusamägi (talk) 07:26, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote some proposal by emails. this is not stricly necessary for the "finalists" but I have to fix this, plus how to list image sets (see Image sets from Wiki Science Competition 2017 in the United States), plus people are giving "winners" instead of "finalists" so i must create a better standard pages for both, and so on. This is one fo the problem to fix or I will buried in details in the week end... and I need to work too...--Alexmar983 (talk) 08:08, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ivo, I'm a senior scientist investigating on geoscience at CSIC, doing outreach, sc.diffusion and lately less active on wikipedia, but i co-founded the spanish chapter of wikimedia-Spain some years ago. I was part of the spanish jury of WLScience this year and wonder if you need people for the next contest. I loved this edition Gaianauta (talk) 14:16, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019

[edit]

Bonjour,

Wiki Loves Science

[edit]

I'm curious if or when the next Wiki Loves Science campaign might happen. The Structured Data on Commons development team is looking at the different campaigns that take place on Commons to see how they might be able to help out in organizing file information in the UploadWizard the next time the campaign runs. Will there be another Wiki Loves Science, and if so do you think there is interest in structured data? Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:44, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Keegan (WMF): Next Wiki Science Competition (WSC) will take place in this November.
I'm not sure about the structured data part, as those images are exceptionally hard for this compared to files from WLM and such. And I'd like to see upload form to become simpler to use and not the opposite.
But feel to inform me about your plans. Kruusamägi (talk) 22:33, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable position for WSC. The technical documents for SDC in campaigns are available if that helps. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:56, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WLS 2017

[edit]

Dear Kruusamägi, I won the first prize of WLS France in two categories in 2017, and was informed of the results only last week, by email, by Sarah Krichen WMFr. Looking back in the archives of my talk page, and in my mail box, I have never received any notification concerning the votes of this challenge. As it seems there are prizes awarded, I wonder how I can get them today, if it's not too late. There are so many participants in those challenges, I really thought my pictures were lost in the crowd. Sarah told me you were among the people in charge of this past challenge, then I would like to understand what happened and what to do. Best regards -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:28, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Basile Morin: Last time I was organizing the international competition. Just to allow people from France to participate in it, there was also opened a possibility to upload images from France but there was no official local competition as there was no local organizer. So the "winners" there were just the authors of images selected to be in the final. Because of that, there were no local awards. This time Wikimedia France will organize local competition and because of there there would also be prizes. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:16, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see. No worry. Thanks, Kruusamägi, for the clarification. I may participate this year again (more for fun). Thanks for having allowed us to participate last time -- Basile Morin (talk) 14:07, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:42, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

Maa-ameti avaandmed

[edit]

Kas nende kaldaerofotode juures on litsents CC BY-SA 4.0 õige, s.t küsisid kindlate piltide avaldamiseks selle litsentsi all eraldi luba? Allikas viitab Maa-ameti avaandmete litsentsile. Pikne 19:21, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kruusamägi (talk) 03:44, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pikne 18:23, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pikne: Tahad mingi "Maa-amet OpenData" malli kokku panna? Laias laastus on CC SA-BY nõuded ja Maa-ameti litsents niigi väga sarnased.
Kruusamägi (talk) 19:09, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ehk sobib nii: {{Maa-amet OpenData}}. Eks tuletatud teose puhul võib kasutada teist litsentsi, aga nende originaalpiltide juures jääb minu meelest praegu liiga kergesti mulje, et Maa-amet ise on seadnud sellised tingimused nagu CC litsentsis, st muu hulgas tuleb originaalist tuletatud teose tegemisel kasutada sama CC litsentsi või ühilduvat litsentsi. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

[edit]

Hello! I'd like to continue our discussion at Category talk:Featured pictures of Dülmen. Hopefully you would like to continue. My idea is, adding/creating a category like this: Category:Featured still-life photographs. IMO the category Category:Still-life photography is a good place and differs to something "objects". What do you think? --XRay 💬 06:41, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seems reasonable.
I wasn't fully sure with they name (that is also why I used question mark there). There is also Category:Studio photography and likely few others (not to mention Category:Featured pictures of objects). I don't know what would the best name for that category, but it seem to be a good idea to have something for photos like that. Kruusamägi (talk) 10:28, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So I'll create the category - without the hyphen (Category:Featured still life photographs). Unfortunately, the notation with and without a hyphen is not consistent here at Commons. My English isn't good enough, but the dictionary say "still life". Thank you very much. --XRay 💬 10:35, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MuIS ja public domain

[edit]

Näiteks foto File:Antropoloogia ja rassiteaduse-instituudi juhataja stamp.jpg paistab olevat üsna hiljuti tehtud. Siis ei saa {{PD-old}} ju õige olla. MuIS-i kandes on logo kirjaga "PUBLICDOMAIN", täpsustamata, mis põhjusel on teos avalikus omandis. CC-i vastavat märget on peetud siin ebapiisavaks: {{Flickr-public domain mark}}. Pikne 14:39, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kruusamägi (talk) 15:42, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Details of churches in Estonia has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

You're invited to provide input…

[edit]

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 i Norge

[edit]

Hi there! I see that you have participated in the Norwegian part of Wiki Loves Monuments in previous years. Thank you very much! I'd like to inform you that the 2022 edition of the contest has just started, and I want to encourage you to participate this year as well!

Photos are not required to have been taken this year – they can be from any time, as long as they are uploaded during October 2022. Maybe you have some more pictures from previous years that can be uploaded for this year's contest?

You can read more about it on the contest page. Thanks, and good luck! Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 17:56, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from the CPUG Board

[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi

[edit]

Hello, regarding the deletion notifications, I think it's best to disengage. I understand that you really wish to keep the photos, and I agree with you that they should be kept (as I said, I'm an inclusionist), but I don't think that it will help to continue the discussion on the deletion request, and, especially if you are accusing the filing party, of malicious intent, it might actually backfire and you might find yourself at some of the disciplinary boards of Wiki Commons. I think all arguments for keeping and/or deleting the images have been made. We've done what we were able to do to keep the images, and now it's up to an admin to decide what to do.

I think that at least some of the images will not be deleted (e.g. that of Jasper Zoova even if there's no article on him — I've seen that another editor, who is not engaged in the deletion discussion, has created a Wikidata entry on Zoova). I've done what I could to establish the people's notability, now it's up to the admins to decide whether the filing party's argument of non-notability is correct or not. I think, given that there's a VRT permission for the photos and that at least some of the people are notable to some extent, there's a decent chance that the photos will be kept, especially since there's no consensus in the community to delete them, and there's no other urging/significant reason to delete them (such as "copyright violation"). So, the only potential reason is "out of scope", but in such cases, where things are up for a case by case analysis and measured on a rather subjective scale of what's in scope and what is not, I would say, that consensus or lack thereof matters for the closing admin's decision to keep or delete the images. And the current situation looks like there's no consensus to delete the images, especially since it's not just you —the uploader— who is objecting the deletion, but also me —an independent, uninvolved Wikipedian. And there's also the person who created the Wikidata entry on Jasper Zoova, who is neither you, nor I. Given this, I think, there's a chance that the images won't be deleted, so we can step back from the discussion now and leave it to the admins.

You could also contact the person, who created the Jasper Zoova entry, and ask them to give some input to the deletion discussion. However, be aware, the person, who created that entry, also added several of those photos to the Category:Men of Estonia (not notable), so that person might end up supporting the deletion of some of the photos while objecting the deletion of some others. But it still might be good to have a third person contribute their opinion to the case. That person also seems to be active on the Estonian Wiki project and thus might be familiar with the people depicted in the photos. :)

Sorry, for the wall of text. I just thought it might be good to express some support and give some advice since it seemed like the deletion request was getting to you quite a bit... Anyway, I wish you a good day :) Nakonana (talk) 14:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no lack of small, blurry and repetitive snapshots. Going after a decent files (that are actually used) is extreme deletionism, and that should not be tolerated. What next? He nominates photos of African writers for deletion, as he has never heard about them, or photos about cultural monuments, as there are no articles on them (or he just considers them promotional). Already the damage to the reputation of Wikimedia Commons would be immense.
One example of an unused file there: Silberg. He has been a lecturer on multiple public universities / colleges, held department director position, has published books, and is a municipal politician. Some time ago even brought a manor house. He is not too notable, but if there would be an article on him in the Estonian Wikipedia, then we would consider him easily notable enough to keep the article (assuming the article quality is also reasonable). // As for Zoova, we should actually have an article about him.
And I also don't like that "newbe" insulting me and lecturing me about how Wikipedia works... I have been contributing since 2006 and I am an administrator in multiple Wikimedia projects. Also, as an Estonian I am far more aware on how notable someone is or is not. Not everyone we would find notable for an article should have an article in English Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons should serve all projects.
He may have a lot of edits thanks to the massive use of the Cat-a-lot tool, but there should be some deeper investigation about his activities. Going around and nominationg stuff for deletion without even checking first is clear vandalism. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nakonana: I now also looked at his user talkpage history and there are comments like this. So this seems pretty clear, that this user has done the same thing in numerous times before and keeps on doing so unless he is stopped. Kruusamägi (talk) 14:04, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"nominates photos of African writers for deletion" This actually does happen — not necessarily by this user but in general it's something that I've come across on the deletion request page and it also happens when new articles on En Wiki are created that are stubs at the time of creation and don't establish very obviously to the En Wiki user that the subject is notable (like, mentioning that the subject is a recipient of a locally well-known award might not be enough to convince an En Wiki user of the subject's notability). Some don't even seem to do a courtesy Google search before nominating for deletion, unfortunately. That's why deletion requests that state "not notable person" or "who is this?" usually spark my curiosity and I do a Google search on the depicted person if the person's name is attached somewhere. If I find something, I post my results as a comment on the deletion request page for the admins to assess notability. I also think that explicitly hunting for supposedly out of scope stuff is kind of a waste of time. Hunting for copyright violations certainly makes sense, but out of scope stuff doesn't harm anyone if it just sits around (until someone accidentally stumbles on it, or not). And as for the nominations of this user in particular, you might have a case as there's a history for that already[3]. But I also see that they are nominating clear copyvios and that's appreciated, so, personally, I'm not at a point where I would report them, but I understand that some might want to. Nakonana (talk) 14:32, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Adding those Google search results is a really valuable addition. People who don't bother to do even basic checks and generate that much mess for others with non-needed deletion requests should be blocked, as this is extremely damaging to the project. There is nothing to achieve there besides demotivating photographers/uploaders. It even doesn't save any memory space, as all deleted files are still kept. Wiki Loves Monuments in Estonia

[edit]

Hi Ivo, I saw you are listed as organizer of Wiki Loves Monuments in Estonia. In the past the local team from Estonia had a short summary in Eglish on https://wikilovesmonuments.ee/in-english/ This page is now not available. Can you please make sure there is somwhere an English summary and add this to the page Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2024/Landing pages. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 16:36, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Romaine: We haven't had any access to the wikilovesmonuments.ee website for years (the domain no longer belongs to us). No user should be directed there!
We are not overly interested in setting up some English pages, as whatever Estonian IP-addresses the banner is shown, the person should be able to speak Estonian (or in rare cases outside of that, just use a translation function in the browser).
We could put that to "Vikipeedia:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/en". But is that really necessary? Kruusamägi (talk) 18:36, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kruusamägi, Officially it is asked for by the international team, but I am not going to demand it. I just wanted to know the status of the old wlm.ee url as it was still linked in the infrastructure for Estonia. I think I removed it now everywhere and the links go all to the Wikipedia page. Romaine (talk) 19:01, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have noticed this part, but at the same time I have also participated in other countries by sometimes uploading images, and foreigners have uploaded images here, and I don't see too much need to translate stuff foreigners would not be interested in. There is just a need to know monument ID-s and click on the upload link. :D Kruusamägi (talk) 19:28, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Külast külla, kahtlane kasutaja

Igaks juhuks mainin, et user:Leaanyka Leisson üleslaadimised kampaanias "Külast külla" pole ilmselt oma tööd, või puudub luba Estopedist1 (talk) 09:35, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Leaanyka Leisson: pildikogumiskampaanias "Külast külla" kogusime inimeste enda tehtud fotosid, sest ilma loata kellegi teise fotode lisamine on autoriõiguste rikkumine. Kas sul on lisatud fotode puhul nõusolek fotograafidelt olemas või oleks mõistlik need pildid kustutada? Kruusamägi (talk) 12:11, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:Hamarik.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
