You can make vacations even better by welcoming pets and being a pet-perfect host.

Around 78% of American pet owners travel with their pets every single year. As a short-term rental owner, this represents over 67 million people you could appeal to by becoming a pet-friendly rental. Between June 2023 and June 2024 alone, pet-friendly Airbnb listings grew by 14%, while 30% of Vrbo properties are pet-friendly. Once you opt to have a pet-friendly rental, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Establish a pet policy. This will include clear pet rules, a responsible owner oath, information on pet fees, check-out duties, and consequences for unauthorized pets.
  • Limit your liability. Pet bites and damage caused by pets are tricky issues that vary by state laws and the local community. Liability insurance protects you should a guest’s pet cause these damages.
  • Communication matters. Communicating expectations to your guests is a huge part of maintaining a respectful and safe environment for them, you as the property owner, and the larger community.
  • Evaluate your insurance. Homeowners insurance doesn’t always cover situations you may face as a short-term rental owner. Consider supplemental short-term rental insurance.
  • Opt for pet-friendly furniture. From tile and concrete flooring to tightly woven fabric couches, make sure your home furnishings are easy to clean and sturdy.
  • Create a damage policy.  It’s inevitable that your pet-friendly property will get damaged, whether it’s torn-up furniture or a chewed fence. That’s where a pet deposit or pet fee comes in handy.

It can be a fantastic business move to welcome pets into your rental, growing your potential customer base even more. But knowing how to go about this change can feel daunting, which is why we have all of the information you need to provide the best accommodations. Plus, we’re providing guests with tips on how to be good guests and pet parents while visiting your vacation rental.
